Proper Sunscreen Use Key to Protection, Expert Says
Choosing the right sunscreen involves more than just the SPF number, according to Dr. Saša Aden, a biomedicine doctor and toxin researcher. Many individuals prioritize the SPF factor when selecting a sun cream, but understanding the broader aspects of sun protection is crucial.
“What truly matters is understanding what protection actually means and what it offers,” Dr. Aden explains. She highlights that the difference in protection between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is relatively minor.
SPF 30 blocks approximately 97 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks around 98 percent – a difference of roughly one percent. Dr. Aden emphasizes that focusing solely on a higher SPF doesn’t necessarily equate to significantly increased protection.
For typical daily exposures, such as driving to work or running errands, she advises considering the correct application and the type of UV filters within the product. Ultimately, maximizing sun protection requires a holistic approach, ensuring adequate application and selecting a product with appropriate spf levels.
