A 5.5-meter gliser experienced a fuel depletion incident off the coast of Casuzze, a village situated west of Marina di Ragusa, on July 28th, according to reports from Malta Today. The vessel was carrying three adult Maltese nationals and one 13-year-old child. Italian police reported that the boat began to drift uncontrollably near Casuzze, an event that prompted the initiation of emergency rescue efforts.
Upon the approach of the Italian coast guard, the occupants of the vessel reacted with apparent panic. In a notable display, the individuals on board threw bags containing a substantial amount of currency into the sea. The recovered sum was estimated to be approximately 700,000 euros.
The money was reportedly secured in plastic bags, and was found packed within items such as a Lidl shopping bag and a bag containing the Maltese brand of tomato sauce, Three Hills. Despite the initial action of discarding the cash into the water, the money was later recovered by swimmers after washing ashore onto the sandy beach. The incident highlighted the dangerous nature of maritime incidents, which can escalate rapidly, and the subsequent retrieval of the funds added an unusual element to the rescue operation.
