The authorities did not classify the attack as a terrorist act, it was a hate crime, ABC TV reported. Scott Wahl said that the attackers were 17 and 18 years old, and the messages found in their car, according to the TV station, were hostile to Islam. The security guard of the mosque was also killed in the attack, and the quick intervention prevented a large number of victims, Wahl said.
In addition to the dead, one person was injured. Wahl told journalists that about two hours before the attack, the mother of one of the suspects called the police and reported that her minor son had run away from home with a friend, and both of them were dressed in camouflage uniforms. She also reported that they had stolen her car and several pieces of her weaponry.
