How to remove sand from the eye quickly and safely? Ophthalmologist’s advice

When children are small, they love to stay in sandpits or on sandy beaches, where they create sandcastles or forts out of sand. They love summer, because then they can play in the sandpit for hours and create with a shovel, a trowel, a rake and a bucket. If there are more children on the playground or on the beach, they can also quarrel with their friends while playing in the sandpit – ‘that’s mine, that’s not yours.’ In this case, they very often use the available means for ‘fight’ – sand.

The tiny grains of sand can scratch the cornea, the transparent layer on the front of the eye. Even a small scratch can cause pain, sensitivity to light and an increased risk of infection. Therefore, it is important not to scratch the eyes and try to remove the foreign object in a safe way.
