He greeted the efforts to provide decent burial for all those killed in the war

Efforts Underway to Honor Victims at Macesna Hill

At a ceremony held on Macesna hill beneath Macesna mountain, the president of the Slovenian Episcopal Conference (SEC) and the bishop of Novo mesto Saje addressed the ongoing efforts to provide a proper burial for those executed during the period following World War II. The location, a significant site for Slovenian history, was described as a place where “the Slovenian history touches ‘the deepest questions of human dignity, truth and the meaning of life.’”

Bishop Saje highlighted the tragic events that occurred within the Kočevska forests, noting that many individuals were executed without legal judgment at the end of the war. For decades, families lacked the ability to pay their respects and offer prayers at a memorial site.

The initiative to bury the victims is being welcomed by the Church, which emphasizes the importance of respecting the deceased as a cornerstone of human culture. A dignified burial is seen as a fundamental expression of respect for human life, created in God’s image. “The Church teaches that respect for the dead is one of the fundamental signs of human culture,” Bishop Saje stated.

“The right to a grave and a dignified burial expresses respect for the human being.” The project represents a crucial step in acknowledging the impact of the war and ensuring remembrance for those affected on macesna hill.

  1. It’s a somber but necessary step to ensure these individuals receive the respect they deserve.
