Have you not used up your old vacation? Check if you can still save it

Vacation Time Rules: Understanding Usage and Extensions

Many employees annually face the question of how to utilize their accrued vacation time, particularly when balances remain at the close of the year. While established guidelines govern the use of annual leave, specific circumstances allow for extensions and adjustments. According to the Employment Relations Act (ZDR-1), employees are generally required to use their vacation time by the end of the current calendar year.

This means if full utilization isn’t possible, a portion of the remaining vacation can be carried over to the subsequent year. However, a strict deadline exists: all remaining vacation must be used by June 30th. If an employee discovers they have a significant amount of unused vacation time at the end of the year, they must explore options for transferring a portion to the following year, adhering to the June 30th deadline.

Failing to utilize the vacation by this date may result in its forfeiture. It’s important for employees to understand these rules regarding how to use your vacation and to plan accordingly to avoid losing accrued time.
