The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring a potential increase in hantavirus infections, anticipating a rise in the coming days. The virus’s incubation period, which can extend up to six weeks, is a key factor in the WHO’s assessment. Dr.
Maria Van Kerkhove, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the WHO, stressed that this situation is distinct from recent global health crises. “Let me be clear – this is not SARS-CoV-2. This is not the beginning of the COVID pandemic, but an outbreak on a ship,” she stated.
The WHO’s analysis focuses on the transmission method of hantavirus. Unlike coronaviruses, the virus spreads through “close and intimate contact,” according to Dr. Van Kerkhove.
