Greece expands network of ‘untouched beaches’

Government Designates 250 Beaches as “Untouched,” Limiting Development

The government has announced the designation of 250 beaches as “untouched,” aiming to preserve their natural landscapes and ecological integrity. These beaches will remain accessible to the public, but with restrictions on commercial development and large-scale activities. Under the new regulations, the installation of tourist infrastructure, including umbrellas, sunbeds, tables, and chairs, is prohibited.

Furthermore, the operation of water sports equipment such as pedalos, jet skis, and kayaks will be restricted. Large gatherings exceeding 10 people, the use of loudspeakers, and vehicular access to the beaches are also banned. Existing agreements for coastal land use will remain valid until their expiration dates.

Subsequently, all new beach usage contracts will be subject to the established guidelines. The selection of these protected beaches was determined by a combination of landscape uniqueness and scientific and ecological assessments. Small, mobile vendors authorized to sell refreshments will be permitted, maintaining a limited level of service while prioritizing the beaches’ natural state.
