GenZ – the future of the Church?

Attendance at the Franciscan Church in Ljubljana has consistently drawn large crowds every Wednesday evening. While this increased presence doesn’t necessarily indicate a widespread return to faith among young people, smaller parish priests are also reporting a rise in younger attendees. Father Jure Ferlež of Doba stated, “Mass conversions are not currently occurring, but there is a noticeable increase in individuals seeking answers and a sense of belonging within the Church.” He emphasized a search for personal authenticity, noting, “It’s not cool to be a good person.

But it’s cool to find one’s own truth.”

Father Ferlež also observed a growing number of individuals approaching the sacraments with genuine intent. “People are coming to the church for reasons beyond simply conducting a ceremony, such as marriage,” he explained. “They are truly seeking spiritual connection.”

Observations suggest a developing religious interest among the younger generation in Slovenia.

The trend reflects a broader search for meaning and community, with individuals increasingly drawn to the Church as a source of personal reflection and spiritual exploration.
