Hong Kong consistently exhibits some of the world’s highest fuel prices, largely due to its complete reliance on imports and substantial taxation. This situation was exacerbated even before the recent US President Donald Trump initiated his conflict with Iran, triggering a significant global energy crisis. CNN reports that the current fuel prices are dramatically elevated.
Data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com indicates a sharp increase in these prices. Comparing Hong Kong’s fuel costs to Slovenia, the city’s rates are now more than double. Slovene motorists currently pay 1.616 euros per liter for petrol, whereas in Hong Kong, the equivalent cost reaches 3.56 euros.
Diesel prices also reflect this disparity. In Slovenia, a liter of diesel costs 1.807 euros, while in Hong Kong, it’s priced at 3.73 euros. Despite car owners accounting for only 2.5% of the population, Hong Kong possesses a considerably larger vehicle fleet – ten times greater than that of Slovenia.
This combination of factors contributes to the extreme fuel prices observed within the territory, particularly during this ongoing energy crisis.
