For the same offense, different fine: will you pay 100 or 500 euros?

Julian Alps Communities Implement Standard Fine for Unauthorized Camping

Municipalities within the Triglav National Park (TNP) and the Julian Alps region are implementing a standardized fine for unauthorized camping following a recent legal amendment. The move, effective this year, establishes a penalty of 500 euros for individuals found camping without authorization. The decision follows years of increasing violations within the protected area.

Previous fines, often significantly lower than the cost of legitimate camping accommodations, proved ineffective in deterring illegal activity. Recognizing this, several municipalities have already amended their local ordinances, while others will address the issue at upcoming municipal council meetings. Gregor Jarkovič, head of the Intermunicipal Inspectorate and Redarership overseeing municipalities in Jesenice, Gorje, Kranjska Gora, and Žirovnica, explained that municipalities already adapting the regulations are utilizing the new fine structure to address offenders.

However, enforcement remains at the discretion of local redarers, who will determine whether to issue a warning or impose the 500-euro fine. The goal is to reinforce regulations protecting the Julian Alps and ensure responsible tourism within the region. The increased fine reflects a commitment to upholding the law and preserving the natural beauty of the area.
