The Hungarian national holiday, marking the commemoration of the March Revolution of 1848, falls on the same date as Viktor Orbán’s bid for a fifth consecutive term as head of government on April 12th. Despite this, the opposition party, Tisa, has maintained a consistent lead over Fidesz in recent opinion polls for several months. Orbán is actively attempting to frame the opposition leader as a mere puppet of Brussels and Kyiv, a strategy designed to undermine their credibility.
However, Magyar is countering this narrative, accusing Orbán of seeking support from the Kremlin to ensure his continued tenure. A prominent banner carried by participants in Orbán’s “peace march” – as reported by a French press agency – declared, “We will not be an Ukrainian colony.” Attendees traveled from various regions of the country, many utilizing buses arranged by a group closely affiliated with Fidesz. Orbán himself addressed the assembled supporters at the parliament building, solidifying his base of support.
