EU and Hungarian Prime Minister Candidate Discuss Funds Following Election Win
Brussels – Following meetings between Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Peter Magyar, the recently elected Prime Minister candidate of Hungary, the European Union has confirmed continued discussions regarding the allocation of funds. The talks were initiated following preliminary contacts between the two parties. Magyar, who secured victory in Hungary’s recent parliamentary elections, addressed the meeting on Facebook, stating that “EU funds are not charity, but compensation for the contributions Hungary has paid to the EU and for the contribution of our country to Europe.” He asserted that billions of euros in EU funds are due to Hungary and its people.
According to Magyar, he emphasized the importance of these funds for initiating a recovery of the Hungarian economy. He also communicated his party’s, Tiszá, commitments to the Hungarian people, specifically highlighting planned anti-corruption measures and Hungary’s potential accession to the euro area. The European Commission representative indicated that these ongoing discussions are focused on ensuring the effective utilization of these funds within Hungary.
The aim is to address concerns regarding the disbursement of European funds and to foster a constructive dialogue between the Hungarian government and the EU.
