Entry into Montenegro will cost EU taxpayers as much as ‘very cheap coffee’

The European Commission has released projections detailing the financial implications of integrating Montenegro into the EU budget over the period spanning 2028 to 2034. According to the figures, the total expected payments to Montenegro are set at approximately €3.1 billion. In return, the nation is projected to contribute roughly €500 million to the overall EU budget.

This calculation results in a net financial cost to the EU estimated at approximately €3 billion. The allocated funds are structured across several key areas of development within the country. The largest portion of the funding, exceeding €1 billion, is designated for regional development and rural areas.

Furthermore, specific allocations include €277 million earmarked for agricultural subsidies and an additional €592 million designated for migration initiatives. Businesses operating within Montenegro are anticipated to receive around €523 million through the European Competitiveness Fund. A senior official noted that the inclusion of Montenegro in the European budget would represent an incremental cost of €1 for every EU taxpayer during the specified budgetary period.

These figures outline the substantial financial commitment required for the country’s integration and development goals within the bloc.
