Double ordeal of the family: daughter found tumor on the heart, son on the brain

Baby’s Rapid Breathing Led to Critical Diagnosis at Pediatric Clinic

A young girl, Pia, received life-saving treatment following a concerning pattern of rapid breathing identified by her developmental clinic several months prior to a confirmed diagnosis. Neža Testen, Pia’s mother, initially attributed her daughter’s breathing to anxiety but recognized the persistent nature of the issue. “At first, I didn’t think anything of it because I thought she was just scared,” Testen stated.

Despite normal findings during examinations of her heart and lungs, the pediatrician recommended a consultation with a pulmonologist. As Pia’s condition deteriorated, Testen and Matej Virag sought immediate medical attention, transporting her to the emergency room and subsequently the Pediatric Clinic. Diagnostic imaging, including an X-ray, revealed fluid accumulation between Pia’s lungs and chest wall.

Medical staff initiated intubation and an artificial coma, a procedure typically completed within 15 to 30 minutes. The team determined the likely cause was an infection. The process involved stabilizing her and allowing for further assessment.

This highlights the importance of attentive observation and proactive medical consultation when concerns arise regarding a child’s well-being.
