Franjo Kelemenović, a former resident of Gorizia, faced legal proceedings in Slovenia nearly a decade ago concerning a cancer diagnosis. Following the diagnosis, Kelemenović reportedly declined standard oncological treatment. Instead, she sought care from a practitioner associated with Croatian remedies.
This alternative treatment regimen, which included herbal remedies and enemas, reportedly cost her approximately 22,000 euros. In June 2022, the District Court in Nova Gorica found Kelemenović guilty and sentenced her to a two-year suspended prison term, accompanied by a two-year probation period. Both the prosecution and the defense subsequently filed appeals.
The matter was reviewed by the Higher Court in Koper. During the appeal process, the court partially upheld the public prosecutor’s appeal. Consequently, the original two-year suspended sentence was reduced to a one-year prison sentence.
The proceedings highlighted the legal repercussions associated with foregoing conventional medical care for alternative treatments.
