Democracy’s decline on the West: ‘The situation in the USA is deteriorating at an extremely fast pace’

A significant portion of the world’s nations are projected to witness a decrease in democratic governance or an increase in autocratic rule by 2025. Estimates indicate that nearly one-quarter of all countries will experience this shift. Furthermore, six out of the ten newly identified autocratic states, as detailed in the 2026 Democracy Report, are located within Europe and North America.

These nations include substantial and influential countries such as Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A report compiled by a team headed by Professor Staffan I. Lindberg from the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg highlights this concerning trend.

Lindberg emphasizes the seriousness of the situation, stating, “The reality that numerous densely populated and economically powerful countries are transitioning towards autocracy is especially troubling.”

The report identifies three key trends impacting democracy globally. These countries possess considerable economic and political influence, capable of significantly altering international organizations, established norms, and trade practices. Consequently, they could fundamentally reshape the global order.

Lindberg notes, “We are already observing the repercussions of this development.” The situation underscores the vulnerability of democratic systems worldwide.
