Collecting signatures for a referendum on local elections from September 1

Initiators submitted nearly 5,300 signatures on Monday to commence the process for a referendum in the DZ. According to Zoran Stevanović, the official deadline for collecting voter signatures is set to begin on September 1. The required threshold to successfully call the referendum is 40,000 signatures.

These gathered signatures must then be submitted no later than the seventh day following the conclusion of the signature collection period. Separately, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Public Administration clarified the voting rights for the local elections scheduled for November 15 this year. The ministry stated that citizens from third countries will not be eligible to vote in these local elections if the proposed legal changes take effect before November 15, 2026.

This potential change in eligibility hinges on the initiators’ ability to secure the necessary number of signatures within the established timeframe. If the required signatures are not collecting by the end of the year, the legal implications regarding voting rights could be triggered. The process for calling the referendum relies heavily on the successful gathering of these substantial numbers of signatures according to the mandated schedule.

The overall procedure underscores the critical role of timely signature submission in determining the path forward for the proposed referendum.
