Geostrategic Analysis Highlights Iran’s Decades-Long Preparations for Confrontation
Geostrategic expert Katja Geršak from the Trivelis Institute has underscored the extensive preparation undertaken by Iran in anticipation of current events. Geršaková stated that Iran has been actively developing strategies for a conflict of this nature for approximately 20 years, effectively establishing a defensive posture. Despite recent attacks, Iran’s military capabilities remain substantial and largely operational.
The nation continues to maintain a significant military presence, particularly within the Hormuz Strait. A key element of Iran’s approach involves asymmetric warfare tactics. Rather than engaging directly with the United States Navy, Iran utilizes inexpensive drones and small boats to achieve strategic objectives.
Geršaková explained this strategy, termed “cheap for expensive,” where relatively low-cost drones elicit a response involving more costly missile systems. “The drone’s birth is a birth of cheap,” Geršaková noted, emphasizing the deliberate deployment of inexpensive assets to provoke a reaction from adversaries. This approach reflects Iran’s ongoing efforts to preparing for potential challenges in the region.
