Bregglez after 11-hour detention on the motorway: Better coordination needed

A1 Motorway Closure Due to Truck Accident Sparks Systemic Concerns

The A1 motorway in the Primorska region experienced a significant disruption following a truck accident involving pig carcasses on Tuesday. The road between Ljubljana and the coast remained closed for 11 hours, prompting criticism of the response from authorities. A key factor in the extended closure was the delayed response from the veterinary inspection service.

Calls made to the inspectors went unanswered for four hours, according to mobility expert Andrej Brglez. He highlighted the situation as a systemic failure, noting that while numerous drivers faced a lengthy queue, the motorway remained inaccessible for an extended period. Brglez emphasized the importance of immediate action, calling for an immediate analysis of the protocols in place.

“Such a systemic breakdown is completely unacceptable,” he stated, given Slovenia’s role as a key transit route with high daily truck traffic. The Slovenian government has recently launched a new transport policy, effective from March, designed to enhance the transport system and mitigate accidents. This policy operates on the “one transport, one responsibility” principle, distributing accountability among the government, transport companies, and drivers.

The initiative also seeks to address driver behavior and reduce accidents resulting from carelessness and recklessness. The incident on the motorway underscores the need for swift and coordinated responses to transport-related incidents.
