Garden Beauty Requires Knowledge and Caution
As beautiful, sunny days encourage outdoor gatherings, many are transforming gardens, balconies, and terraces into inviting spaces. However, enjoying the aesthetic appeal of plants – including flowers, trees, and shrubs – necessitates a careful approach. Not all plants are suitable for consumption, and understanding plant characteristics is crucial.
Mateja Račevski, from Arboretum Volčji Potok, highlighted the common use of glicinias in pergolas, primarily for their shade-providing qualities and attractive flowers. “Glicinias are beautiful, but they are not useful for food,” she stated. Similarly, landscape architect notes the potential danger of certain species.
Hollyhocks, for example, are poisonous and should be treated with extreme caution when collected for floral arrangements. “We must be careful when collecting them for a bouquet. We must wash our hands, especially not give them to our mouths, because it is very poisonous,” she explained.
Račevski emphasized the importance of learning about plants when designing gardens. “One of the often asked questions by architects, I am asked, is: “What is the most important thing to know about plants?”” It’s vital to recognize that while many plants are beautiful, a responsible approach requires knowledge and careful consideration of their potential risks.
