‘As on the crime scene’: poisonous caterpillars have flooded parks

Elm Processionary Moth Caterpillars Cause Concern in Several Berlin Parks

Several parts of Berlin are experiencing an infestation of elm processionary moth caterpillars, prompting warnings and localized closures. The Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Spandau, and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg districts have been identified as particularly affected areas, with numerous caterpillars present. The caterpillars’ presence has led to comparisons with “crime scenes,” as red-and-white striped warning signs are deployed across popular green spaces to deter public access.

CNN reporters visited Jungfernheide, Berlin’s second-largest park, which is one of the most heavily impacted locations. City officials are actively managing the situation, with teams removing nests from branches. According to a city official overseeing the work, approximately 2,000 trees within Jungfernheide have been infected and subsequently fenced off.

The official stated that the issue is not solvable, but efforts are focused on limiting the extent of the damage caused by the caterpillars. The situation highlights the ongoing challenge of managing the spread of these insects across several areas of the city. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and implement preventative measures.
