American media: Putin could provoke NATO with a limited attack

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, the United States has revised its assessment regarding potential aggression from Russia. Previously, US officials believed that Vladimir Putin would refrain from directly challenging NATO members while engaged in the conflict in Ukraine. However, officials now suggest this assessment is likely to change this year.

The underlying objective of a potential Russian attack on NATO countries during the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to the reports, would be to destabilize and split the alliance. The newspaper also highlighted a possible scenario involving the deployment of troops in unmarked uniforms for the occupation of territories. While the Wall Street Journal notes that the probability of such an extreme event—an invasion targeting the eastern flank of NATO—remains low, it suggests this risk increases over time.

The timeframe for potential actions is cited as extending from this autumn through 2029. Adding to these concerns, CNN indicated that if an attack were to occur, the most probable targets would be the Baltic states or Poland. These reports suggest a strategic shift in perceived Russian intent, moving beyond localized conflict to encompass broader geopolitical challenges against the collective defense structure of NATO.

The focus remains on how Moscow might attempt to undermine the unity of the alliance through military action or proxy means.
