Former Footballer Marios Oikonomou Dies Following Ioannina Accident

Ioannina, Greece – Marios Oikonomou, a former footballer with an extensive international career, died on May 27 following a serious accident involving a scooter. The incident occurred on May 23 on a main street in Ioannina when he collided with a vehicle. Oikonomou was transported to the University General Hospital of Ioannina in critical condition and immediately underwent emergency surgery due to severe head injuries sustained in the crash.

He was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit for several days. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he could not be saved. The deceased enjoyed a distinguished career spanning multiple countries and clubs.

Oikonomou initially began his professional football journey with PAS Giannini before progressing to six appearances for the Greek national team. He later played for Bologna (2014-2017), advancing to Serie A, as well as Cagliari, SPAL, Bari, Sampdoria, AEK Athens, Copenhagen, and Panathinaikos. Notably, he secured the Danish national championship title with Copenhagen in 2022.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
