A black bear was spotted in the village, overturned garbage cans

Police officers were alerted on Sunday morning to the presence of a bear in the area of Spodnja Kanomlja within the municipality of Idrija. Upon investigation at the site, officers observed that the animal had overturned two waste containers sometime during the night. A representative from the PU Nova Gorica, Dean Božnik, confirmed the sighting and relayed information to local hunting authorities.

Božnik issued general guidance to the public regarding encounters with wildlife. He stressed the importance of caution and respect when encountering any bear. He advised that bears typically maintain a distance from human populations, and therefore, residents should avoid actions that might provoke the animal.

Specifically, the public is cautioned against startling the bear, approaching it too closely, or attempting to lure it with food. In the event that a person encounters a bear, authorities recommend remaining calm. The primary directive is to allow the animal sufficient space to retreat naturally, and individuals should slowly withdraw from the area.

Furthermore, Božnik emphasized the crucial role of waste management in minimizing human-wildlife conflict. He highlighted that leaving food scraps or general waste in natural areas can inadvertently attract wild animals into proximity with human settlements.
