Czech on foot: skull of Saint taken from church

Theft of St. Wenceslaus Skull Reported in Czech Republic

Jablone, Czech Republic – A theft occurred Tuesday morning at the St. Lawrence and St.

Wenceslaus basilica in Jablone, northern Czech Republic, resulting in the removal of a significant relic. An unknown perpetrator gained access to the basilica and broke a glass case, stealing the skull of St. Wenceslaus.

The skull, belonging to a member of noble birth and believed to have lived in the 13th century, was housed within the church. Pope John Paul II officially recognized St. Wenceslaus as a saint in 1995, honoring him for his compassion, selfless nature, and charitable actions.

Prague archbishop Stanislav Pribyl expressed dismay over the incident. He noted the skull held considerable historical importance, serving as a focal point for pilgrimage to the site where St. Wenceslaus lived and worked over 750 years ago.

“The value of the relic is primarily historical,” Pribyl stated. Police have released security footage in connection with the theft. An investigation is currently underway.

The incident highlights a breach of security at a prominent Czech religious site and the loss of a revered relic associated with St. Wenceslaus.
