The Hungarian Foreign Minister confirmed talks with Lavrov during EU meetings

The Washington Post reported late in the week that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó engaged in communication with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov while in Brussels. The discussions occurred specifically during breaks in the meetings. These accusations are substantial, given that EU member states operate under the obligation of sincere cooperation, and the details of these interactions remain confidential, according to Euronews.

Initially, Hungary refuted these claims, but Szijjártó has now provided clarification, confirming his conversations with Lavrov. He stated that “diplomacy must be maintained.” The European Commission has subsequently urged Hungary to offer further explanation, labeling the reports as “concerning.”

Furthermore, Lavrov and Szijjártó maintain that decisions made by the European Union regarding energy, the automotive industry, and security significantly impact Hungary’s relationships with nations beyond the European Union. They emphasized that these EU actions directly affect Hungary’s partnerships.

During these discussions, the ministers underscored the importance of continued dialogue.
