Mercury Spill at Kranj Educational Facility Resolved by Firefighters

Kranj, Slovenia – A small mercury spill occurred at an educational facility on Koroška Street on Thursday at approximately 12:00, according to the Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Emergency Situations. Approximately two deciliters of mercury were released within the building. Firefighters immediately responded and initiated a full evacuation of the affected floor.

Following the initial response, a toxicologist from the University Clinical Center of Ljubljana assessed individuals who had come into contact with the substance prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. No medical assistance was required. The Fire and Rescue Service Kranj, with assistance from the Environmental Laboratory’s mobile unit, successfully neutralized the remaining mercury.

Commander Andraž Šifrer reported that a significant portion of the spilled material was collected on Thursday, though some mercury remains trapped within the parquet flooring of the classroom and adjacent cabinet. Experts are scheduled to arrive later today to assess the situation and oversee the remediation process. The affected classroom and cabinet have been sealed to prevent further contamination.
