EU Signals Readiness Following Armenia Trade Agreement Implementation
Yerevan, Armenia – The European Union is proceeding with the implementation of the trade agreement concluded between the EU and Armenia last year, according to statements made by European Commission President von der Leyen. Speaking at the margins of the EU-Armenia summit today, von der Leyen affirmed, “The agreement is an agreement and we have it.”
The Commission President emphasized the EU’s preparedness for various potential outcomes, stating, “We are ready for any scenario.” DPA reports indicate that the implementation process is currently in its final stages within the European Union, with remaining customs obligations being addressed. French President Emmanuel Macron, also participating in the state visit to Armenia, indicated the EU’s willingness to utilize the EU Instrument for the Protection against Economic Coercion (ACI).
This tool, as reported by AFP, allows the Union to respond to economic coercion. Von der Leyen’s comments suggest a measured approach, focusing on the continued execution of the trade agreement while acknowledging the necessary democratic procedures involved on both sides. The EU remains prepared to leverage the ACI instrument if required.
