Vintgar Gorge: municipality and operator on the opposite banks

Vintgar Gorge Reopens Following Dispute Resolution

The Vintgar gorge reopened its gates to the public at the beginning of April following a period of uncertainty. The reopening marks the end of a dispute involving the municipality and the landowner controlling access to a portion of the gorge. Earlier in February, the municipality established a defined entrance frame for visitors to the gorge.

Mayor Peter Torkar stated that the gorge would remain open to the public, with entry permitted through the legally designated operator. This action followed negotiations initiated after a significant incident five years prior. In 2019, a Hungarian tourist sustained severe injuries when a rock dislodged from the gorge wall.

The tourist, a speech therapist, suffered a critical head injury, a prolonged coma, and significant long-term consequences impacting her ability to continue her profession. The incident prompted discussions regarding compensation for the tourist’s injuries. The municipality’s action to establish a formal entrance for the Vintgar gorge was intended to resolve the underlying issues and ensure continued access for visitors while adhering to legal operating procedures.

Authorities emphasized a commitment to safety and responsible tourism within the natural environment of the gorge.
