Freedom MPs to Remain in Opposition, Demand Role Fulfillment
Slovenia’s Freedom party leader, Borut Sajovic, stated that if the party definitively chooses to remain in opposition, they “must play the opposition role.” Following unsuccessful attempts to form a government, the Freedom MPs will continue their stance. According to Sajovic, this entails fulfilling the responsibilities associated with opposition, including not supporting the government mandate or contributing votes. “Opposition does not support the mandate, opposition does not contribute votes,” Sajovic explained.
“If they are part of the opposition, they must of course return the position of the president of the state assembly.” He characterized the situation as “clear and understandable,” citing concerns regarding voter blindness, denial, and alleged irregularities in the electoral process. Previous instances have demonstrated the possibility of an opposition MP leading parliament. During Igor Zorčič’s tenure, he departed the coalition, though efforts to remove him through a vote ultimately lacked sufficient support.
Sajovic emphasized that a clear message was conveyed during that period as well. The Freedom MPs’ continued position reflects their inability to secure a governing coalition. The party’s decision underscores ongoing challenges in forming a government following recent elections.
