The preliminary hearing in the Šutar case has been scheduled for Friday

Novo Mesto Man Awaits Trial Following Assault Case

A man, identified as Marko Šiljić, is currently being held in custody awaiting trial in connection with the death of 48-year-old Gregor Šutar. Initial police investigations led to the arrest of Šiljić’s brother-in-law, but following testimony from multiple witnesses indicating Šiljić’s involvement in the attack, the court released him from custody in December of last year. Shortly after this initial decision, the prosecution requested continued detention, and the court subsequently ordered it.

The indictment, filed by the Novo mesto district public prosecutor’s office in mid-March, was quickly finalized as Šiljić’s lawyer, Dušan Medved, did not file an appeal. The prosecution alleges that Šiljić caused particularly serious bodily injury resulting in Šutar’s death. This charge carries a potential sentence of three to fifteen years under the Slovenian criminal code.

Candles were placed in front of the Lokalpatriot in Novo mesto as part of a public display of remembrance. The trial is expected to proceed in the coming months.

  1. This case is developing slowly, and I hope the upcoming hearing will bring clarity to the investigation.
