Slovenia’s Media Freedom Ranking Declines Slightly, Organization Cites Multiple Factors
Slovenia’s ranking in the annual international media freedom index fell by 1.2 points, resulting in a total score of 72.9 out of 100 across 180 countries. According to Pavol Szalai, director of the organization’s Prague office, the decline reflects broader shifts within the media landscape. The organization notes several factors influencing Slovenia’s position.
Recent legislative changes, including the implementation of the European Act on Media Freedom, have bolstered funding for the Public Radio and Television of Slovenia. However, the impact of the law addressing strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) remains to be fully assessed. Previously, Slovenia gained nine places on the scale in the preceding year, largely due to a combination of these measures.
Despite this progress, the organization expresses continued concern, particularly with the emergence of a new right-wing government. Szalai emphasized that current interventions may not be sufficient to address existing challenges within the Slovenian media sector. The organization’s assessment highlights the importance of sustained efforts to safeguard media freedom and maintain Slovenia’s position within the international rankings.
