Ukraine, International Partners Mark Anniversary of Chernobyl Drone Attack
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskyy stated today that the world must not allow nuclear terrorism to persist, emphasizing the need to hold Russia accountable for its actions. Speaking on the X network, Zelenskyy referenced the anniversary of a Russian drone attack against the Chernobyl protective structure last year. Today’s memorial ceremonies, held to honor those impacted by the ongoing threat, included attendance from Moldavian President Maia Sandu and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi.
Grossi’s visit coincided with plans to discuss further measures following the IAEA’s forthcoming assessment of the reactor’s protective cover. Grossi underscored the agency’s continued support for Ukraine, stating, “IAEA will continue to support Ukraine, not giving up a single moment.” He highlighted the urgency of initiating repairs to the upper portion of the structure, asserting that commencement should occur as soon as possible. This marks Grossi’s 14th visit to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian aggression in February.
The ongoing situation remains a significant concern, and international efforts continue to focus on mitigating the risks associated with the damaged reactor. The world cannot afford to ignore the potential consequences.
