Robot has become a competitor: Ace surprises athletes

Robot Competes with Human Table Tennis Players, Demonstrating Advanced AI

A newly developed robot, dubbed “Ace,” is showcasing advancements in artificial intelligence through competitive table tennis matches. The robot, designed by Sony, has demonstrated the ability to challenge and, at times, defeat human players, including professional athletes. Testing of the Ace robot has included matches against skilled players, with notable results.

In December, the robot successfully competed against all but one of four highly skilled players in a match. Participants included Japanese professional players Minami Ando and Kakeru Sone. Kinjiro Nakamura, a former Olympic table tennis competitor who participated in the 1992 Barcelona Games, observed the Ace robot’s performance and commented, “Nobody else would be able to do this.” The robot’s capabilities stem from a sophisticated system incorporating nine cameras strategically positioned around the table.

This allows for precise tracking of the ball, a key element in its competitive advantage. The Ace robot’s performance highlights the potential of AI in specialized athletic domains. Researchers continue to study the robot’s movements and strategic decision-making, furthering the development of intelligent robotic systems.
