‘Against parking lots’: Initiative calls for signature submission

Residents Mobilize Against Proposed Traffic Changes in Ljubljana

At a press conference held today by civil initiatives focused on preserving Štepanjsko naselje’s cultural heritage – including Plečnik’s stadium, marketplace, and Križanke – organizers announced a growing effort to oppose proposed changes to Ljubljana’s traffic regulations. The initiative, spearheaded by representatives like Klemen Fajs of the Štepanjsko naselje Initiative, highlighted concerns regarding the city’s infrastructure and mobility. Speaking at the conference, Fajs stated that the Ljubljana City Municipality is addressing a “parking problem bill” resulting from what he described as 20 years of inadequate urban planning.

He argued that the city has failed to develop sufficient mobility alternatives, leading to a shortage of parking spaces and rendering permit systems ineffective. “The Ljubljana City Municipality is presenting us with a parking problem bill for its own mistakes after 20 years of cooking,” Fajs explained. The initiative is actively collecting signatures for a referendum intended to challenge the proposed changes.

Residents are voicing their opposition, largely against the perceived negative impact on parking availability within Ljubljana’s larger neighborhoods. The group’s efforts reflect a broader concern regarding sustainable urban development and the need for improved transportation options. The Alpe Adria Green Organization has also joined initiative in their opposition.
