Local Childcare Facilities Receive Warning Regarding Potential Hazards in Sand-Containing Toys
Ljubljana, Slovenia – Slovenian kindergartens and primary schools have recently received a letter alerting them to potential safety concerns regarding certain toys. The communication, issued by the Clinical Institute for Occupational Medicine of University Clinical Centre Ljubljana, the Slovenian Consumer Union, and the Ministry of Education and Youth of Slovenia, highlights the possibility of hazards associated with toys containing sand. The letter details findings from several European countries where colorful, kinetic, and stretchable “anti-stress” toys with sand internally have been found to contain asbestos.
As a result, some products have been officially recalled. Similar toys, including colored sand for creative projects, sand-filled figurines, and sand for stickers, are frequently sold in Slovenia, often under various brand names and sourced from unknown suppliers. Two of these products have already been officially recalled by the Slovenian Health Inspectorate following a recall last week.
The letter emphasizes that toys containing sand lahko pose a risk and urges recipients to exercise caution. The letter underscores the importance of vigilance regarding the materials used in children’s toys.
