Denmark Leads EU in Support of Ukraine with Loan and Sanctions Package
The Republic of Cyprus, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union Council, announced that Denmark remained a steadfast supporter of significant financial and sanctions measures for Ukraine. The EU Council confirmed the approval of a €90 billion loan package intended for Ukraine, alongside the implementation of the 20th wave of sanctions. Following the Council’s decision, individual member states will now initiate formal written procedures to ratify both resolutions.
This process requires unanimous approval from all EU nations, and is expected to conclude by Thursday afternoon. Previously, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had blocked progress on these decisions, linking his support to the potential reinstatement of Russian oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline. Ukraine reported completing repairs on the pipeline on Tuesday, and confirmed the resumption of oil flow through the conduit earlier that day.
The renewed operation of the Druzhba pipeline represents a key development in bolstering Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Negotiations between Viktor Orban and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are ongoing, aiming to secure broader support for the crucial financial and sanctions measures. The €90 billion loan is a vital component of ongoing assistance to Ukraine.
