Investigation Reveals Details of 2021 Daegu Aircraft Incident

A 2021 incident occurred in Daegu, South Korea, involving a collision between two military aircraft. Both pilots survived the crash, but the damage to the aircraft resulted in approximately 880 million won (roughly 506,488 euros) in costs for the South Korean military. Following the incident, one of the pilots, who subsequently left the military, faced a fine of 88 million won (approximately 50,658 euros) due to the extent of the damage.

This fine was levied by a court as a result of the aircraft damage. A special investigative committee has now concluded its review, stating that the pilot involved intended to document his final flight with photographs on the day of the accident. The committee noted that photographing significant flights was a previously established practice for military pilots.

The pilot reportedly communicated this intention during a pre-flight meeting. The two aircraft were operating in a pair formation during their return to base. The pilot of the second, lead aircraft, observed the pilot taking photographs with a personal mobile phone.

This event occurred while the lead aircraft was in control. The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the collision and the resulting financial repercussions for the military.
