A jacket once owned by a passenger aboard the Titanic is set to be auctioned, with an estimated value between £250,000 and £350,000, according to CNN reports. The garment was worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first-class passenger on the ill-fated voyage. The Titanic, launched in 1912, was at the time the largest passenger ship in operation and was widely believed to be “unsinkable.” However, its inaugural journey ended in a devastating international tragedy just four days after its departure on April 10th.
At approximately 11:40 p.m. on April 14th, the Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The ship sank within less than three hours, a stark contrast to its initial reputation.
The disaster resulted in a significant loss of life, with approximately 2,220 people aboard – including passengers and crew – perishing. Only around 700 individuals survived the sinking. The jacket’s previous owner was the secretary for fashion designer Lucy Duff Gordon, who was traveling from Chicago at the time.
The incident remains a significant event in maritime history, highlighting the limitations of technology and the tragic consequences of the Titanic’s sinking.
