Brečko on Barbarez: a strong character who took BiH to the World Cup

Sergej Barbarez established a notable career as a footballer in Germany, playing for a number of prominent clubs across the Bundesliga. Over his tenure, he participated in 330 league matches, consistently demonstrating his goal-scoring ability with a total of 96 goals. Barbarez’s professional journey included stints with Hannover, Union Berlin, Hansa Rostock, Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger, and Bayer Leverkusen.

He was particularly recognized for his time with Hamburger, where he became a beloved and influential figure. Those who knew Barbarez well described him as a strong-willed individual with a firm perspective. Mišo Brečko, who collaborated with Barbarez early in his career, recalled, “Sergej had a very, very strong opinion.

He was a strong personality.”

Despite his success and status as a key player, Barbarez experienced periods of friction within his clubs. Specifically, he had disagreements with the president of Hamburger, leading to his departure from the club. Following his time in Hamburg, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen.

During his time with Hamburger, Barbarez achieved a significant individual accomplishment, becoming the Bundesliga’s top scorer for a single season.
