A ceasefire between the United States and Iran, agreed upon today, has led to the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is responsible for approximately five percent of global oil shipments. However, industry expert Willie Walsh cautioned that the resumption of normal oil flow is not guaranteed.
Walsh, speaking from Singapore, highlighted the concentrated nature of oil refining capacity within the Middle East. He indicated that disruptions at regional refineries are likely to significantly prolong any challenges to oil supply. “I think not everyone is fully aware of how concentrated the capacities are in certain parts of the world,” Walsh stated.
Predicting a timeline for restoring sufficient aviation fuel supplies remains difficult. Walsh estimated that it will take several months to fully recover adequate oil supplies following the disruptions. The exact duration of this recovery period is uncertain, dependent on the extent of the ongoing issues at Middle Eastern refineries.
