Reports have emerged regarding an incident at the Mariborski otok swimming pool, which is known locally as the “Swimming Paradise.” According to MMC, which refers to Radio Maribor, a woman wearing a burkini was reportedly instructed to leave the facility. Listeners contacted the local radio station to report the situation. In response to inquiries, Tomi Prosnik, a deputy director of Šport Maribor, the managing body for Mariborski otok, addressed the matter.
He clarified that the reported issue was not connected to the woman’s religious attire. Prosnik confirmed that the facility permits Muslim women wearing burkini to swim. However, he specified that adherence to the pool’s established regulations is mandatory.
Specifically, all patrons, including those wearing burkini, must utilize swimwear constructed from appropriate swimming material. The focus of the guidelines, according to the management, is maintaining adherence to facility safety and material standards, rather than religious accommodation. The clarification from Šport Maribor aims to address the perceived problem surrounding the swimwear.
While the presence of the burkini is permitted for the women, the requirement for swimwear made of designated swimming material remains in effect for all visitors to the pool.
