Jerneja Ličev, who has been employed at the Černivec farm for sixteen years, reported on the severe impact of the recent dry spell. He stated that while previous droughts have occurred, the current conditions represent a disaster of a magnitude he has not previously witnessed. According to his estimates, the drought has resulted in the destruction of nearly 80 percent of the expected crop yield.
Observing the harvested goods, Ličev pointed to the corn, noting its extreme dryness, with many sections containing little more than straw. He indicated that the level of damage varied across different parcels, though the overall picture remains bleak. A primary concern revolves around the sustenance for the farm’s 400 head of livestock.
Ličev noted that the scarcity of feed has prompted some local farmers to consider the difficult alternative of sending their animals to slaughterhouses. The impact extends beyond grain crops, raising questions about the viability of fruit and vegetable harvests. Regarding the local market, vendors in Ljubljana anticipate upward price adjustments for produce.
One seller explained that because input costs remain high while overall crop yields are diminished, the resulting profit margin will necessitate an increase in consumer pricing.
