An ice breaker was involved in an accident in the Kvarner Bay region on Saturday, shortly before midnight. The vessel, which was carrying two Croatian citizens, collided with the coast in the southwestern area of the island, specifically between the beaches of Sveta Fuska and Torkul. First responders were dispatched to the scene, including personnel from the company responsible for assisting vessels at sea, who also transported medical staff to the location.
Following the incident, two individuals were reported injured and were subsequently transported to the clinical center in Rijeka for treatment. The ice breaker, estimated to be approximately nine meters in length, sustained damage to its bow area; however, reports confirmed that the hull did not take on any water. At the time of the accident, the vessel’s owner was not aboard.
Authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. According to the Croatian press agency Hina, both the marine port administration and local police are actively investigating the details of the incident. The focus of the inquiry is to determine the precise cause of the vessel’s impact with the coastline.
