An adult Javan macaque was responsible for injuring 18 residents in the city of Tembilahan. According to Junaidy Ismail, head of the city’s fire and rescue service, the victims sustained bites and scratches from the animal, with attacks primarily occurring when residents were alone. Some of the individuals who were injured required stitches exceeding ten, and all affected persons needed immediate vaccination against rabies.
The monkey was successfully captured in a trap set up within the city on Thursday. Despite the capture, local authorities have advised residents to maintain high levels of caution, noting the potential for the macaque to operate as part of a larger group. Officials issued a warning via social media, stating the concern that other monkeys might pose a threat to the public.
As of the latest reports from the city’s health department, 100 people have received rabies vaccinations following the incident. Due to safety concerns, 40 schools in the area remain closed. The incident underscores the ongoing risk posed by wild animal encounters.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant, as officials warn that the risk of further attacks from other monkeys remains a possibility, necessitating continued public awareness and adherence to safety guidelines.
