ZZZS issued a decision on July 24th, which the organization stated was made in the context of an ongoing donor campaign for a specific boy. According to findings presented by the Council for Advanced Treatments at the Pediatric Clinic of the University Clinical Center (UKC) Ljubljana, the available options for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy within Slovenia are not fully exhausted. The council concluded that slowing the progression of the boy’s disease may be achievable through the use of duvyzat (givinostat).
This medication received approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in June 2025 and is currently accessible in Slovenia. In its comprehensive assessment, the council also reviewed the published clinical study results pertaining to the drug elevidys. Specifically, the analysis focused on the third-phase EMBARK study.
The council reported that this study did not achieve its primary objective endpoint over a 52-week period. These findings contribute to the ongoing medical evaluation regarding the best course of treatment for the boy. The decision by ZZZS underscores the ongoing scientific review of advanced therapies available for Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients in the region.
