A devastating earthquake has resulted in the deaths of eight family members in the Gosfand Dara area of Kabul province. The Ministry’s press office confirmed the fatalities, noting that only a two-year-old boy survived the disaster. The child sustained injuries as a result of the earthquake.
The Disaster Management Agency reports the boy was among those affected by the seismic event. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 186 kilometers beneath the surface in the northeastern Badakhshan province. Seismologists have identified a magnitude 5.8 earthquake as the cause.
Tremors were felt across several regions of Afghanistan, including the capital, Kabul. Afghanistan is frequently impacted by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range. This region sits near the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, a common location for seismic activity.
Last August, a separate earthquake with a magnitude of 6 caused widespread damage and resulted in over 2,200 fatalities.
