Iran has asserted that two American warplanes were shot down within its territory, according to the BBC’s report. The initial incident involved an F-15 fighter jet operating over the southwest region of the country. Subsequently, a second aircraft, involved in the recovery efforts for the F-15’s crew, was also reportedly downed.
The United States and Iran have been engaged in a sustained effort to locate American military personnel following the downing of the planes. The F-15 carried a crew of two; one member was successfully rescued by US forces, while the fate of the second pilot remains unknown. In response to the ongoing search, the U.S.
has deployed specialized search and rescue units, often referred to as the “Swiss Air Force Knife,” to assist in the operation. These units will utilize Blackhawk helicopters to conduct extensive searches of the affected area. A former commander of US air rescue squads indicated that these specialized helicopters will be instrumental in the search.
