A sea turtle bitches more swimmers in Croatia

Several unusual encounters involving a Caretta turtle have been reported in the area of Kastel, resulting in multiple incidents involving swimmers. According to reports, the activity occurred in the vicinity of Kastel, specifically between Poštanski and Šulavi beaches, covering the stretch from Kastel Kambelovac to Kastel Lukšić. The reports indicate that the turtle bitched several swimmers, causing injuries primarily on the thighs and upper legs, which manifested as large circular bruises.

As a result of the incidents, three individuals required medical attention. Biologically, the Caretta turtle does not possess teeth; instead, it utilizes extremely strong jaws and a beak designed for breaking shells. Dr.

Pero Tutman, from the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, commented on the nature of the encounters, noting that such behavior is atypical. He stated that aggressive actions toward people are not characteristic of the species, as turtles generally subsist by feeding on shellfish. The expert commentary emphasized that while the bites occurred, the behavior deviates from the species’ normal feeding patterns.

The incidents serve as a reminder of the potential risks posed by marine wildlife encounters for swimmers in the Kastel area.
